 Trust the fine folks at Schizophrenic Records to make the coolest and most painstakingly diehard "diehard edition" of any record. This brilliant release features 100 LPs with 14 lost tracks on gorgeous coloured wax, another 3 on a bonus 7", a Young Lions sticker, magnet, zine, silkscreened art, and an extra screened and hand-numbered alternate cover. Jesus. The mixes on the record aren't too great, but the Young Lions' great songs make up for this, paving a fine bridge between '77 punk and early hardcore. Awesome release, awesome packaging.

 Lightning fast thrashy hardcore in the vein of D.R.I. Pretty solid release actually. This band has a cool history too. They opened for some pretty legendary acts such as Circle Jerks, Gang Green, 7 Seconds, and Descendents. Apparently Pushead liked their demo tape so much when they sent it in for a review that he agreed to put out this LP. The record was also produced by Youth Youth Youth's Brian Taylor.

Not to be confused with G.O.D., the goregrind band from Peterborough, or the other short-lived TOHC G.O.D. (aka Granby on Demo), D.O.G. or Death of Gods was a Mississauga-based thrashy hardcore band in the late 80s. Pretty sure this record is decently rare and sells for a pretty penny. The lyrics to this 7” are hilarious and the record includes a song called “Lake Ontario Smells Like Shit”, and another song telling straight edge cats to chill and let the beer drinkers drink their beer undisturbed. Cool stuff.

I picked this record up at Hammer City Records in Hamilton when Craig showed it to me and still know next to nothing about the mysterious Brontocrushrock. This being said, I’m very grateful to Craig for getting me into this 7” because it's surprisingly memorable for a band with a name like Brontocrushrock. I would even go so far as to say that it’s one of my favourite Toronto records from the late 80’s and early 90’s. Unlike a lot of other bands from this era, Bronto plays straight up punk rock, and the best song on this record, I Don’t Want You sounds something like a Dead Kennedys song. From what I’ve gathered about this band, they might still be operating under the name Son of Bronto, and may have briefly shared a member or two with the UK Subs and the notorious BFG.

When I was a kid, there used to be an advertisement that always played on TV by a group called Concerned Children’s Advertisers that featured a bunch of kids doing their “thing”, informing us that, “everyone has a thing, what’s your thing?” If Toronto punk legends BFG, or Bunchofuckingoofs were in this video, it’s likely that playing in a band or making music would not be highlighted as their thing. This is because of all of the things BFG did, making music was probably the thing they were worst at. Instead, BFG was incredibly skillful and drinking beer, and most other kinds of alcoholic beverages as I understand. They were also remarkably talented at beating up Nazis, and are credited as the reason the Toronto scene no longer has to deal with fascist boneheads at shows. BFG started in 1983 more as a local gang to beat up Nazi skinheads in Kensington Market than to make music. Between 1983 and 1988 they ran Fort Goof, a bike shop, punk house, venue, and boozecan which I’ve been told was in the basement of the LCBO at Spadina and Baldwin. Even after moving out of the Fort, BFG has created a loyal crew of drunk market punks that still kick around today. BFG supposedly played their last show in 2011 but they’ll probably be back. There’s No Solution… is not an excellent record by any means, but has become something of a collector’s item due to the BFG’s legendary status. It’s also the only double 7” ever put out by a Toronto punk band.
